V-42 of known Sgt 1-1 FSSF man who was awarded the Silver Star for bravery at Anzio. - back view, scabbard fold	$10,000 CAD (USD $7,900) CASE V-42 Extremely rare and much sought after, and documented Case V-42 "Commando Knife" issued to the First Special Service Force (FSSF), The Devil's Brigade). This is a very much used one and the "Braves" were noted for their use of these knives. This one was purchased directly from the son of the veteran who had carried it in the war. That man was from Texas, was a Sergeant during the war, was commissioned after the war and served as Aide-de-Camp to General Frederick. This man was sadly killed in action in the Korean War. This man was on the Cerro Alto Raid in the Anzio Beach-head and was awarded a Silver Star for bravery for going into a minefield at Anzio in Italy to rescue an injured comrade. A copy of his citation will come with the knife. He was also wounded and received a Purple Heart. A copy of a photo of him when he was training at Helena, Montana with the FSSF comes with the knife. This V-42 had lost its scabbard over the years. The V-42 scabbard now with the knife was carried by a different, though sadly unidentified, veteran of the FSSF. That man's name is not known but as it is still full length and is folded in FSSF fashion so that it could be worn behind the pistol holster it is logical to deduce that it was carried by an FSSF man. The securing tabs are partly missing. The wear on the scabbard is indicative that it too was almost certainly carried throughout the Aleutian and Italian Campaigns and likely Southern France, and thus it is a most suitable companion for this V-42. Research material on the man who carried the knife will be provided with the knife. The leather lace tie-down is original new-old stock WWII surplus. Some collectors love the mint examples that the soldiers never used, but mailed home. This on the other hand is one those, that if if could talk, would say "BEEN THERE, DONE THAT!". The blade had been sharpened so much that it is now obviously slimmer than the factory original specifications. The blade had painted flat olive drab, suggesting strongly that it was painted to reduce the chance of glinting when stalking an enemy and thus alerting an enemy in combat. Documented V-42 knives that are also known to have been carried in combat are incredibly rare. This one was also carried by a decorated hero who was killed in the Korean War. To me, the only knife that is more important to me is the F-S Fighting Knife carried by my own father in 1943 with No. 4 Commando. I have worked in museums for over 45-years and artifacts with documented and impressive history like this are always a treasure. I have had several people ask to buy it, so I finally put a price on it. If it sells, fine, if not then I am quite happy to keeps it for many years to come.
