Small Arms Limited and Canadian Arsenals Limited, both at Long Branch, Canada

Dominion Small Arms

Canada set up a new firearms manufacturing plant at Long Branch, just to the West of Torontoi, Ontario Canada. in 1940.

Small Arms Limited (SAL)

The name for Dominion Small Arms was soon changed in 1940 to Small Arms Limited before any production had occurred.

SAL produced No. 4 rifles, Sten Mk. II submchine guns etc.

SAL was closed down at the end of World War II.

A very poor quality video survives, filmed in Small Arms Limited during World War II.

In the video at:   15:22 ro 17:05 A No. 4 Mk. I* (T) TARDE PATTERN sniper rifle s/n 74L0326 is show being removed from its C No. 15 Mk. I transit chest, and scope being taken out of its scope case and fitted and removed; a standard No. 4 mk. I* (T) with C No. 32 scope (likely a Mk. II, Mk. IA or Mk. II) and then a No. 4 Mk. I* (T) s/n 80L8xxx with the special butt and  C No. 32 Mk. 4 scope (later renamed C No. 67 Mk. I scope).

Canadian Arsenals Limited (CAL)

CAL was set up in 1946 and operated until 1968 I believe.

  • They finished the production of the No. 4 Mk. I* (T) sniper rifles for the British which were fitted wih the C No. 32 Mk. 3 scope, canvas C No. 8 Mk. 2 scope case and C No. 15 Mk. I wooden transit chest.
  • The continued production of the C No.7 22-IN Mk. I to 1946.
  • In 1949-1950 tghey manufactured C No. 4 Mk. I* rifles. In 1954-1955 the manufactured some sapre bodies for No. 4 Mk. I* rifles. When used to replace a damaged body, the serial number of the damaged rifle was stamped onto this replacement body. Thus a 19455 dated rilfe can have a serial number from 1943 for example.
  • CAL also made Browning M3 machine guns in .50 calibre for the RCAF.
